I’m Not Just Leaving My Job as Mayor. I Just Want to Do More.

One of the questions I’ve been asked since announcing my candidacy for McCracken County Judge Executive is a fair one:

“Why don’t you fulfill your commitment as Mayor for two more years and then run?”

My answer is pretty simple.

I’m not just leaving my job as Mayor. I simply want to do more for our community.

I want to take the leadership I have brought to the City of Paducah and use it to benefit all McCracken County residents; those that live both in the county and city.

As Mayor, my impact is limited. My responsibility is primarily within the city limits. But many of the biggest decisions facing our community over the next several years will be made at the county level—and those decisions will impact people whether they live in the City of Paducah or elsewhere in McCracken County.

That is why I believe the question isn’t, “Why now?”

The better question is, “Can we really afford to wait?”

I believe this is McCracken County’s time.

We are at the beginning of a period of growth unlike anything we have experienced in decades. We have two new nuclear enrichment plants, the massive AI data center investment, and other opportunities ahead of us.

Some construction is beginning now but a great deal of that development won’t start turning dirt for another year or more.

As I discussed in my last post “From George’s Desk” - critical decisions must be made before the dirt is turned.

Decisions about infrastructure. Roads. Sewer. Housing. Public safety. Workforce. Schools. Land use. Economic development. Other critical infrastructure needs. And how we pay for and manage all of it.

These aren’t decisions you make after the growth gets here, we must plan ahead to protect the citizens of McCracken County.

That is why I believe we need to make sure we have the best leadership in place to take McCracken County through the next five to ten years.

One thing I learned while leading at the corporate level is – Often It Is Wise to Make a Change When Things Are Going Well.

I was very fortunate to be a leader in a large, successful company for 40 years. During that time, I learned firsthand that successful organizations don’t wait until something is broken before they make a leadership change.

Often, they make changes when things are going well because they know the organization is entering a new chapter and will need different leadership skills to continue being successful.

That is the position I believe McCracken County is in today.

The office of County Judge Executive oversees a county government with an annual budget approximating $50 million. It is a major operation.

The current Judge Executive comes from a legal background. That brings a particular set of skills—the ability to understand, interpret and enforce the law.

My background is different.

My experience is in business and management. I understand P&Ls and balance sheets. But more importantly, my skills are in people—leading people, developing relationships, building strong teams and working alongside others to get things done. I’ve always believed the best leaders don’t need to take the credit. They bring the right people to the table, work toward a common goal and turn ideas into results.

That’s my secret sauce.

The Decisions Come Before the Construction

One of the difficult things to explain about economic development is the decision-making cycle.

People see a new plant when construction begins. They see a data center when the buildings start going up. They see growth when new employees and families begin moving into the community.

But many of the decisions that determine whether that growth ultimately benefits the community happen long before any of that.

That is where McCracken County is at this moment in time.

We are at the cusp of a whole series of very critical decisions. If we wait until all of these projects are under construction to begin asking whether we have the right plans, infrastructure and leadership in place, we will have waited too long.

You must plan before the opportunity arrives - not react after it gets here.

And if you believe a change in leadership is needed to guide those decisions, that change has to happen before the decisions are made, not after the opportunity has passed us by.

I’m Running for the Right Reasons

I was elected to serve as Mayor of Paducah, and I take that responsibility seriously.

I’m proud of what we have accomplished in the city, and I will continue doing my job as Mayor every day that I hold this office.

But I also believe leadership means recognizing when you have an opportunity to make a greater impact. That is why I am running for County Judge Executive.

Not because I am looking for another title.

Not because I want to walk away from the job I have.

I’m running because I want to do more for this community. I also believe the time to do it is now and I am the right person for the job.

If the voters choose someone else in November, I’ll still be Mayor. I’ll go back to work the next morning and do everything I can to help move this community forward.

But I would always wonder whether I did everything I could at this important moment in McCracken County’s history.

I believe the next five to ten years are going to shape this community for generations. We know the opportunities are coming and the decisions are coming even sooner!

I believe McCracken County needs to be ready and I’m ready to lead!
